Venture on over to 3rd street and Chicago Ave. on the Bay on August 22 to see the Draken Viking Ship arrival around 6:30 pm! Welcome Captain Bjorn Ahlanders and the entire crew as the ship stops in Ocean City for eight days.
From August 22-29, you can relive history in ways you never have before as you explore this marvel Viking ship. The crew will share their personal stories from reliving the mythical sea voyages. Their excursion mimics the first transatlantic crossing and Viking discovery of the New World.
Norwegian entrepreneur Sigurd Aase began the building of the Draken Harald Hårfagre in 2008. As an entrepreneur and overseer of the entire project, he is considered a modern Viking.
The ship’s East Coast Tour of 2018, Expedition America, started July 9 leaving out of Mystic Seaport, CT. Throughout the tour, the ship will visit 14 different harbors throughout the East Coast from Maine to South Carolina.
According to the Draken Viking Ship’s website, “The aim of the Draken Harald Hårfagre project is to explore the world and embrace the Viking spirit – to look beyond the horizon and seek adventure and to inspire people to take on challenges.”
Measuring 150 ft long, the ship has a massive red sail on a 79 ft tall mast.
To keep the historical vibe as strong as possible, the ship was built to all the same specifications, using the same technology as the Vikings used back in its era (between 750 A.D. and 1100 A.D.). It even includes the head and tail of a dragon!
Along with the ship will be Draken Village! Enjoy the photo and video exhibition illustrating Viking history, explorers, the Draken’s modern adventures, deck tour tickets sales, and local food & beverage vendors.
Both the exhibition and Village are free and open to the public from 10 am - 8 pm, weather permitting!
Get a deck tour with the ship’s crew members! Tickets are available for $12/adult, $6/children ages 5-15, and free for children under 4. After the ship departs from Ocean City, it will head to Philadelphia, PA for its next stopover. Some of the final stopover locations include Norfolk, Va, Washington D.C.
Be on the lookout for exclusive coverage of the Draken Viking Ship arrival! Or, even better… come see it for yourself!
